Travel

My Travel pages feature articles from trips around the world with photographs by my inamorata Steven Richter. The two of us are almost always on the road in the winter -- Venice, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, India, Vietnam and Cambodia -- and we try to escape the New York summers by going somewhere cool. You’ll find articles I’ve written about these places here. Friends are constantly emailing me for lists of my favorites places to eat on their own travels. From time to time, I’ll post some of my current favorites in this Travel section.

Sri Lanka: Stalking the Big Blue
My passion for jewelry is intense, nearly as consuming as my passion for truffled Nantucket scallops, suckling pig or crusty and creamy macaroni-and-cheese.  Between meals as a restaurant critic, I collect vintage fakery and dream of real gems…now we are headed for a week in sapphire-rich Sri Lanka…

Tuscany Without Brakes
Caesare Casella was planning a fast jaunt to Tuscany and Parma to capture the essence of how Italians eat. Or maybe it was how Tuscans eat. Casella being a consummate Tuscan and only coincidently, Italian...

Insatiable in New Delhi with Suvir Saran
The haunting smells of something cooking are everywhere in Chandri Chowk, the main street of old Delhi's sprawling bazaar. They make a confusion of scents calling out to foodie travelers like me from snack food stands, closet-sized food stalls and rudimentary restaurants tucked into the spice market, between pocket-size jewlery shops and along streets famous for their wedding saris and savory pancake-like parathas.

Eating On Their Feet
Yes, Venetians have figured it out. It’s faster to walk in a city built on water. When it pours or grows icy, they may jump on and off the vaporetto (the floating bus) where they often huddle on deck or stand inside...When the vaporettos shift into late night mode, waits loom long and everyone walks. Does that somehow illuminate standup eating?...

Paris: Counter Revolution
Parisiens, famously blind chauvinists, have discovered the rest of the world and found it…delicious. Italian is the newest rage with proliferating trattorie in every neighborhood and even a gelato shop boldly planted just steps beyond the Ile St. Louis where Berthillon reigns. Back from a six weeks retreat to work on my memoir (even a hermit has to eat dinner), I can report that snails are having a rousing revival and frog's legs are dancing...

Barcelona Dine-A-Thon
Jose Ramon Andres has two passions, well, actually the Barcelona-raised chef of Jaleo in Washington D.C. bristles with irrepressible enthusiasms. So let's say, two grand passions: America and Cataluyna (not necessarily in that order.) A mutual friend asks him to email me a list of his Barcelona favorites for my winter retreat there. “I wish I could go along and show her My Barcelona.” The email says.

A Critic’s Passage to India
Six weeks leapfrogging about India. My emotions are always churning, whipped by a cascade of color and beauty, the amazing hospitality everywhere, the haunting pain and poverty, filth and frustration.
